DonaTapa

The DONATAPA project seeks to make the beaches of Costa Rica accessible so that people with disabilities or reduced mobility can enjoy the sand and the sea.

The plastic polymers class 2. 4 and 6 – in this case tops from bottles, tetrapaks, toiletry, and cleaning product bottles – are recycled and processed into ‘plastic wood’.  This material is then used to create retractable pathways which facilities access to the ocean for whom the sand presents mobility challenges.

We are honored to have enrolled the Municipality of Perez Zeledon, the Association for Social Programs of Dominical (our nearest beach), and the Centro de Acopio El General as our partners. Most recently we facilitated the partnering of the Municipality and the Feria del Agricultor Generaleno to establish a collection points within the Feria, visited by over 2,000 people a day three days a week each week of the year.

This is a  long-term, on-going project – just as ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, there are a lot of beaches in Costa Rica to be made accessible! We invite all our members and friends to join us in this ambitious and  invaluable project. The goal is for Costa Rica to be the first Central American country with accessible beaches.

In addition to making people’s lives easier and more enjoyable, we are helping to clean up our environment. With tops removed, it takes 30% less energy for plastic containers to be compressed at the recycling centre, thus also saving energy. It’s a Win-Win-Win - for the environment, the planet, and society.  Please engage your local community associations, schools and businesses to collect tops and bring them to our monthly meetings or to any of the recycling aggregation centers around Perez Zeledon.
